He starts to speak when she first puts out the call, but only manages an "I think-" before figuring out he should probably stay quiet. Not until the bike is nearly upon the original spot does he ask:

"Who were you trying to reach?"

He assumes that's what she was doing, anyway. The mechanics are lost on him.
