Virginia Swainston is lying face-down on her bed and crying. The reason is perched in the waste-paper basket (though she'll have to move it, she can't let her parents find it, oh sweet God what would they say, they'll throw her out).
That noise? That's the noise of a girl's entire life plan crashing down around her ears.
Also, it's (with somewhat tasteless irony) a bang.
...that's grass she's lying on.
Virginia jerks her head up, red-eyed, and stares around in incoherent shock.

She's also rolling her eyes.
"Great, another one."

Those parts of Virginia's brain not currently taken up with angsting are trying to work out how she could have suddenly died and not realised it.

It's like getting thwapped by a particularly bitchy breeze.
"Come on, get up and stop feeling sorry for yourself."

For now, she's under the impression that this is some kind of divine visitation.

She sighs and rubs her face with her hands.
"You're not where you were, this world's messed up and it brought you here instead. You can't get back. Sorry. My name's Sky."

"I'm sorry, I've learned my lesson-- please let me go back--"

Sky crosses her arms.
"I didn't bring you here, and I'm not an agent of whatever did. If you'd like my help, say so. Otherwise, keep whining, and I'll go talk to someone else."
no subject
"Wait--"
She focuses on one of the most striking points about what she's just been told.
"--this world?"

"This world?"
Either she thinks repeating it will make it make sense, or she's hinting that she'd like it explained. Choose wisely!

Yeah, Sky's going to be pointing people towards Kansas everywhere she goes. It's simpler.

Perhaps Sky broke her.

If this is a contest, she'll win. Air spirits don't need to blink.

"...Did I die?"
You may have a slow one, here.

...or she's dreaming. YES THAT'S IT SHE'S DREAMING.

"Kansas."

Let the record state that Virginia doesn't believe a word of this.

Virginia wanders in a direction. Then she looks to Sky for affirmation that this is, in fact, the correct way.

Eyeroll.

Virginia meanders off in a general that-way direction, still uncertain of what the hell is happening, though at least she's not complaining about it any more. Hey, kids, this is what happens when you pass through the storm of shock onto the plateau of omgwtf.
