Mel is not in Metropolis. Neither Hana nor Loo are, either.

This is important because everyone on approved babysitting duty, who aren't off exploring the country in a flying car, is. In Metropolis, she means. Having fun.Without her.

So she'll just have to make her own fun.

and by 'make her own fun', she means 'sit on theCooper porch and carve out new throwing stakes', while the girls attempt to see how many toys they can throw off the porch in the course of an afternoon

"...Eden?" COMMENCE BOGGLING.

"What we called the world before we came here," Mel explains. "Partly cause it was written on big letters at the end of the street."

"Your city, y'mean?" She's trying to wrap her brain around this idea.

"Any gardens or anything?"

Mel shakes her head. "Not my home city. I've been flashed into two worlds between where I was born and this one. And this is the first time I've seen a garden."

"Two?!" That is a lot. Most people don't even do one!

"Man... I guess you're old hat at this, then."

"Getting used to it," Mel admits.

"Never easy."

...

"I guess not..." Especially with the "can't get back" thing.

"Least y'got family here, right?"

"Least that."

Mel pulls Loo too her, but let's her go when there're struggles.

"Most of my family. More than most people."

She nods. "Kin's important.

"Place here's closer'n anywhere else I been, too." It's sort of like a family, if you squint.

(Given some of the feuds Sonia's seen, the hand-cutting business is not entirely out of character for certain families, as well.)

"Happens," Mel says, then pauses. "I mean, happened at the apartments. We all bonded together. Where I met Sokka, and the girls' father. Not so much in Eden."

"What happened there? uh, if it ain't, y'know... bad t'ask..."

"It ain't," Mel says, but shakes her head. "We didn't mesh. All whenkinda stir crazy. Z- my husband just seemed to clam up and never left the tent. Even Sokka went quiet. It was just quiet and bad. Everyone went bad."

She nods. "Wasn't nothin', like, influencin' things, was there? Just.... din't like it?"

"Not that we could tell," Mel admits. "Might have been. The whole place was small. I just got stir crazy."

"Like... couldn't leave?" She grimaces. That's definitely a scary thought.

"Just one street," Mel says. "We couldn't even climb the wall around it. not where I wanted to bring up my daughters."

Shudder. "I can see where that'd drive you mad... Like a prison, huh?"

"Yeah," Mel says with a small shudder. "This world's the best one by far."

She gives this consideration for a few moments. "Guess it ain't so bad, takin' all things in account." Needs more trees, but that's just here.

"Maybe we can either stay here or... y'know, go back."

"Nice if we had the choice," Mel agrees. "I dunno there's anything for me back where I came from."

"Got somethin' I need t'do... but..." Sigh. "Yeah, guess nothin' after that. No kin, even."

She turns the current toy-slash-projectile in her hands for a moment. "Guess I'd just come back here, if I could. Afterwards."

"I dunno what happened after I left," Mel reflects. "If what my sister says I stopped in her timeline is right, then I bet it all got messy, but maybe not. I try not to think abut it."

"...yeah... And... there's gotta be someone else who can do it, right? God wouldn't just... let this happen." TOTALLY NOT GRASPING AT STRAWS HERE!

Mel looks at Sonia thoughtfully.

"Right," she says vaguely. She's not exactly one for God, and doesn't know how to say 'I used to know Jesus'.

Someone else agrees! That means...

Well, that nobody's arguing it. So, she has SOME excuse to keep believing that she has not totally failed because of something she has no control of! Yey!

Though she lapses into quiet tossing after that. There's nothing much else to say about the subject.
