Someone, at some stage, had planted a vegetable-and-herb garden at the bottom of the old Winchester place. It's more than a little overgrown now, but Jess doesn't mind so much.

It's giving her something to do while she thinks.

(of which she is doing a good deal)

Hey, somebody else is playing with leafs.

Penance wholeheartedly approves of this hobby of yours, Jess.

She will prove it by dropping a leaf on her head from the tree branch she's sitting on.

It has a happy face scratched onto it.

The leaf gets noticed, eventually. Jess pulls it out of her curly hair and then stares.

A happy face?

Heart thumping a little too fast, she looks up.

uhm... hi!

Red-girl smiles. She's had very good luck making friends here!

Slowly, she gets to her feet.

"Whatcha doin up there?"

Sitting! Making friends! ...maybe.

Penance smiles 'cause the blonde girl is smiling and it's nice to smile at smiley people.

Also waving with pointy fingers.

"You can't talk?"

Headtilt.

Also, the wavering of a smile as she puts her hands carefully back to the tree branch. A little confused, Penance is, because nice people who smile at her wave sometimes, too, but her New Possible Friend is not.

She's probably just unintentionally answered Jess' question, though.

"Okay."

Pause.

"It's, um. I got hurt before. Just jumpy."

Penance pouts a little, still confused but-- Jess doesn't look angry. She's still friendly. Very, very carefully, Penance starts to climb down the tree. She doesn't notice when leaves and twigs fall from the tree, just from the pass of her hair, but Jess probably will.

Once she's down, she crouches beside the tree, giving the blonde a shy, friendly smile.

A quick smile back.

"I'm Jess."

Bigger smile!

Unfortunately for Jess, she'll have to be creative like the rest of the farm and just give her a name - like Thorn, or the all-creative "Red Girl."

Eh, names. They can be unimportant.

"Do you want to help?"

She can help! ~~She can help nine times!~~

Penance tilts her head, keeping the smile. What does Jess need help with?

"I'm weeding," she explains, apparently comfortable with the silence. "So, things that look like this," she lifts a weed, "go out. Some with this creeper grass stuff."

Headtilt.

And then slow, carefully creeping forward so she can crouch beside the ground Jess was weeding and reach forward with careful hands. It-- sort of works?

The weeds are gone, but then so are a few flowerheads. Accidentally.

Jess grins.

"That's it. And if you aren't sure, just, um. Leave it."

It's more a side-effect of her razor-sharp fingers than Penance mistaking flowers for weeds. But she smiles when Jess does and continues, a little more careful of how close her fingers get to the flowers.

This isn't quite as interactive as some of the other activities she's done with friends, but it's nice all the same. Peaceful, calming. Which is good, Penance thinks.

Peaceful and calming are underated, as far as Jess is concerned. And so the blonde girl is perfectly happy just to continue weeding.
