Rachel dreams - spoilers for the end of the Animorphs series

Her pace is steady, if only because anything that isn't steady calls her attention and gives her something to be angry at, and even Rachel finds it difficult to get mad at her own feet. Plodding along with her little bag slung over one shoulder, chewing numbly on some of the bread from yesterday's dinner, hardly looking around her. It's just another road in another state probably with another town that needs a thug tossed out of it or something. Doesn't need her, just needs anybody.

What's the point?



Grumbling to herself, a very tired, very cranky blonde continues on.

After a while, she'll come to a spot where the trees line the road prettily. But, the odd thing here, is that every fourth tree or so, there's a collection of CDs hanging from the branches, twisting in the wind.

And in the reflection on the back of the CDs, there is a man watching her progress.

Yeah, okay. 'Cause that's not creepy.

She stops just shy of the first tree, frowning at the CDs, peering down the road at the flash of other discs in the branches. Then back to the first one.

"...that is some creepy looking cover-art," Rachel mutters to herself, frowning at the image in the CD.

"Thank you." Mort replies. His face doesn't move much, only enough to speak. He's never been much of one for showing his emotions.

"AUGH!"

She doesn't fall when she leaps back, and that's slightly to Rachel's credit. Not much, though, since she leapt back.

And with that tiny act of what she considers cowardice, and the fact that Mort viewed it, means Rachel now regards the creepy CDs with defensive anger.

"Okay, what the hell is this?"

"It's a form of worship." Morts voice goes a little softer as the Cd spins away from her. "My followers are putting them up to give me a view where I normally wouldn't have one."

The words that set off alarm bells here are 'worship' and 'followers.'

Rachel does not react well to alarm bells.

She snatches at one of the CDs, yanking it off the string to the tree so she can hold it steady and scowl directly at it. "What the hell does that mean? You're some kind of religious leader? A cult?"

"That depends on your view of things. Does the one being worshipped lead the relegion?" He strokes his chin, pondering it. I would say no, I am no form of relegious leader. I leave that to my priests."

"As to whether it is a cult, well, I'd have to say no again. Cults tend to be small, scary groups, that force changes upon their followers in order to control them. Although my people are small, I do not attempt to control them, simply to guide them."

He pauses, seeking what has been forgotten. "Ah, perhaps if I introduced myself it would be more clear. I am Mort, God of Prophecy and Reflection."

"...your name is Mort?"

She probably shouldn't mock gods but... Mort?

"Like, all hail the Mighty Mort? Our Mort who art in Heaven? Dear Mort, bring me a puppy for Christmas? Mort?"

"And you chose the name you use I presume?" He's heard it all before, it doesn't bug him. Mainly cause he lived his mortal life being teased as Mortimer. "Although if you have such issue with my name, it is rather excellent that you are speaking with the god of travellers right now."

Rachel arches a brow, still holding the CD and feeling more than a little foolish about chatting with it. "You said prophecy and reflection a second ago. What does making fun of your name have to do with traveling?"

"Not. Not speaking to the god of travelers." Mort coughs. "Excuse me, my attention was diverted momentarily." He holds up a finger. "I would never impinge on Bobs territory."

How often is she looking up?









With friends like Lucy Cooper, it's an important question.

She is not, no. Not yet.



When another flash from her dream hits her and she still has no answers and throws her bag at a passing tree with a practical roar of frustration, throwing her head back to do it, then she's looking up.


...and looking a little sheepish while she's at it.

Hi, Lucy.

Lucy circles to a landing, downshifts, and holds out a bag.

"Pineapple," she says simply.

It makes everything better!

And after a couple of weeks with kills from the forests and relying on the kindness of strangers, Rachel's reaction to this is fairly understandable.

"Oh, sweet, you're the best, Lucy."

Fr srs. Rachel grins as she takes the bag and peeks inside.

"Welcome."

There are pineapples! Three, even! (The rest are back in Lucy's kitchen.)

THREE PINEAPPLES.

Rachel beams.

And trots over to the bag she'd thrown at the tree to dig around for a bit.

"I have no idea what your style is," she says, walking back with something clutched in her hand, "but this totally isn't mind and it'd look great on you anyway."

Here, Lucy, have one of those utterly useless things villagers insisted on giving Rachel for her help: an opal pendant on a silver chain.

"Thank you," she says, taking it and wrapping the chain a few times around her wrist.

(If she wears it properly the chain might break when she upshifts.)

Also? BEAM.

Precisely the reason why Rachel doesn't wear it. She grins right back, though. "Not exactly a match for fresh fruit," she points out, lifting the bag Lucy had given her, "but it's what I've got.

"What are you doing all the way out here? Hawaii's the other way."

[littlestcooper]

"Said I'd find you."

Friendly eyeroll.

Rachel blinks.

Apparently it had not occurred to her that the purpose of Lucy going out would be only to find her.

"...yeah, I knew that," she says slowly, smiling a little. "Guess I'm getting easy to track. How embarrassing."

It'd be more embarrassing if she'd been trying to cover her path... at all.

"I'm good at finding."

You need not fear for your stealth abilities, Rachel.

...though they are kind of lame at the moment.
