She couldn't just leave.
...well, no, that's not true, she absolutely could leave. And maybe later, she'll feel bad about it with words like 'abandon' and such. But for right now, Rachel feels no qualms about leaving New York almost as soon as she's arrived.
Which doesn't explain why she just spent the entire morning running in and out of the Triffids in an attempt to thin them further, but it's her story and she's sticking to it.
Now, tired and breathless and kicking herself for not packing clothes beyond her morphing suit, Rachel is sitting on a protected bit of cement away from the killer plants, repacking her little bag. She's going to need to take inventory if she's going to make it to California as fast as she's wanting to, make sure she has what others will want to get her what she needs.
Useless jewelry for food, for instance.
