Sonia is resting sulkily on the ground, breathing heavily. (This is pretty much what happens when you have giant second trimester belly. It is still v. annoying.)

...she is adorable.

"Yeah? So the dad isn't around? Damn, huh?" Steph offers another cookie in sympathy. "Don't worry too much, I don't think anyone thinks anything of it, you know. Our worlds are way more easygoing about that than yours seems to be."

At a guess.

"....I hadda..." Not kill. Technically. "He'd be gone, no matter what."

Sympathy cookies are always awesome. She crams it in her mouth, scrubbing her eyes. THOSE ARE TOTALLY NOT TEARS, JUST FYI. THEY ARE... SOMETHING ELSE. SOMETHING STRONG AND NOT MUSHY.

"Easygoin' about what?"

"Bein' pregnant and not, y'know, married, or old enough, or whatever." Steph waves a hand and offers another cookie with the other.

TOTALLY not tears. And they totally didn't prompt the cookie.

THERE MAY BE HUGS IN THE FUTURE.

"I reckon you'll be a good mum, though."

She half-shrugs, crunching on cookie.

"'f'not like I c'd ged marrieb, anywayf," she says around it. Table manners are what happen to other people. (Also, no table.)

There is a glance full of "???!?!" "How d'you reckon that?!" Sonia considers herself good at a very few things, and momming is not one of them.

"Iunno, I just think you would." Steph grins at her. "You seem the type. How come you couldn't get married?"

"'cause I killed him.

"Kind of."

Blink. Blink.

HUG. Personal space is for others. Less-needing-of-hugs-others.

"...kind of?"

"h- he... made me fight him. t'prove how strong i was. an'... an' i beat him. he hadda... go to sleep."

She's stiff and tense, but is not complaining about spontaneous affection right now. Especially with the opportunity to lean her head on a shoulder.

"I mean... even if I hadn't come here... i'd still never see 'im again."

Steph pats her shoulder, looking at her with wide eyes. "You killed him ... accidentally?"

"He wouldn't stop 'til I beat him! I hadda go on! I hadda..."

She scrubs her eyes viciously. "...jus' hope God's got someone else chosen back there... now we're both out of the picture."

"Oh, sweetheart." Steph hugs her again. "It'll be all right."

"i think you're the nicest person i ever met."

Steph squeezes her shoulders again. "You gotta meet more people," she informs her, firmly. "There's stacks of people nicer than me. I just like babies."

Half smile. Then, shyly, "You, um, know a lot about 'em?"

Steph shakes her head. "I babysit Mel's a lot. The twins, the two girls? They're awesome. You should come play with them, they'd love you, I know."

That gets a bigger smile. "Yeah. They like throwin' stuff." Which is cute!

"Mel said she'd teach me t'read along with them."

"Ooh, I can help you with that too, if you like." Steph grins at her. "Well, I can't teach you t'read their language, because I don't know any of it. But I can help with English!"

Blink!

"I thought..." MULTIPLE LANGUAGES. Mind: blown.

"Man... I dunno if I can fit all that in my head."

"Sure you can," Steph says confidently, "Mel will go easy. Hey, if she's gonna teach you to write Sokka's language, I totally want to learn too. Do you reckon she'd teach me too?"

"I guess so?" Blink. "I thought it was all just one language..."

Steph grimaces expressively. "There's like a billion. I only know one. Sokka, my boyfriend, he knows heaps -- he can speak Chinese and everything. Me, I just speak boring old English."

"Man... he must be real smart, then."

She lies back. "...I think Alucard knows, um, Latin..."

"He's a genius," Steph agrees, a big dopey adoring grin on her face as she leans back to join Sonia on the lawn. "He's brilliant, and sweet, and funny, and really really dumb in his own special way."

d'awwww. It's hard not to feel cheered from th sheer waves of gooey coming from Steph right now. "Found a good one, huh?"

"The very best," Steph agrees.

She has lots of gooey to spare! HERE HAVE SOME GOOEY HERE HERE

"He's really good with kids too. We'll both totally help you out babysitting, when you need us."
