Suki is sitting in the shade of a big beech tree, a little way removed from the buildings and goings on of the main farmstead. It's safe to say that her time at the Cooper Farm has not started very well, what with meeting Sokka and finding out that he's not the one that she left behind at the Western Air Temple, and having to swallow the fact that he's with some other girl here. Hence why she's distinctly unhappy right now.

There are other Sokkas here, allegedly, but she refuses to get her hopes up about that. Meditation hasn't helped at all. So she's just sitting there in her Earth clothes, brooding, and looking nothing like the proud Kyoshi warrior that some folk know her to be.

Steph shrugs, sulky and even more annoyed with this new girl for being so mature and confident and ... annoying.

"If you hurt him even a tiny little bit, even if you bring up bad memories for him, I'm going to punch you."

She's just sayin'.

Suki looks down her nose at Steph, all her heartbreak shelved for now. Annoyance is rapidly becoming a mutual thing.

"Really," she deadpans.

It's not in Suki's nature to underestimate an opponent. She sees that Steph has a fairly athletic physique herself. And who knows what crazy Earth fighting styles she might be trained in. She hasn't gotten with Dinah to see what judo and boxing and katare (yeah she forgot how it was pronounced) are all about yet.

Still, Suki fancies her chances if they ever did come to blows.

"It's sweet that you're so protective of him," she says, smiling wanly. "But if he's the Sokka I know, or anything like him, he can take care of himself."

"Not that I have any desire to hurt him or mess with his head."

"You better not," Steph mutters, scowling at the ground.

The worst thing about acting like this is that she's perfectly aware of how bratty and obnoxious she sounds. It's just ... hard to stop. Of course Sokka can take care of himself physically. But he'll angst.

"... don't ask him about Katara." It's a suggestion, more than anything else. "If you talk to him. Just ... don't."

An eye narrows now, less hostile and more curious.

"Okay. I won't," she vouches.

"But... why?"

"Stuff happened." Steph still isn't looking at her, still looks unhappy. "Not really my business to tell anyone. It wasn't good stuff."

Steph is Helpful.

And now there's concern.

"Katara's a friend of mine. She'd want me to know."

"Nothing has happened to her in my time," she adds. "Did it happen here?"

Or in Suki's future!

Steph shakes her head. "She's not here. It was another world."

"Oh," Suki says. And gives a faint nod.

There's no way of telling if the Katara in question is the one from Suki's point in time. Even if she's not, Suki still wants to know what happened.

She waits, worry mingling with expectancy on her face.

Looks like that's all Steph's going to say, though. She shrugs, glancing over at Suki.

"It's up to Sokka to tell you, if he wants to. Not me."

"You said not to ask him about her," Suki objects.

There's a hint of helplessness about her tone.

"By the sounds of things, he's not going to tell me if I don't. And I want to know. She's my friend."

Steph shakes her head helplessly. "I'm not going to tell you. It took years and years for him to even tell me. It's probably not even any of your business."

Suki grits her teeth against the urge to lash out verbally.

"Grruh."

Her head lolls forward into awaiting palms, and together they sink between her upraised knees.

"I hate this place."

And she's none too enamored with Steph either.

"If you're not going to tell me, just go. Leave me alone."

Steph looks at her for a moment, hesitating.

"I'm sorry," she offers eventually, guiltily. "I really am. I just ... I love him. I'm not going to ... I dunno, step aside and be noble. Maybe I should, but I'm not going to."

Oh great. They're in LOVE.

Suki grimaces into her hands. That's more than she ever wanted to know. She and her Sokka weren't at that point yet. At least, she doesn't think they were. Are. Whatever! Now she's wondering about it. Regardless, the fact that Steph and maybe the same Sokka are...? That hurts.

"If you love each other, I'm sure he doesn't want you to anyway," she manages.

"Things change. I'm not mad at you or him or anything. It's just... hard."

Steph doesn't know if Sokka loves her. She's never said to him that she does yet. But she knows he cares about her, and ... well, that's cool, for now. That's heaps. That's all she really needs.

"I'm sorry," Steph offers again. There's not much else to say.

"Don't be," Suki responds, her head still firmly planted in her hands. "It's not your fault. You didn't do anything wrong."

"I just wish I'd never come here."

The monster-infested world in general, she can handle. This particular place, not so much at the moment.

Steph leans over to put a hand on her shoulder, very tentative.

"Yeah ... I understand, I think. Can I do anything?"

Apart from leave Sokka because that's not going to happen.

She could tell her what happened to Katara!

But Suki doesn't bother asking for that.

She sniffs (rather than sniffles, because that'd just be pathetic) and brings her head back up. There's a weary smile in return for the comforting gesture.

"No. I don't think so."

Beat.

"Well... actually? I haven't eaten anything since I arrived last night. And I'm not sure what the deal is for food around here."

Sokka's delicious-looking sandwiches had died on the ground, and then she'd headed out to this spot. Suki is ravenous now that she thinks about it.

"Sure." Steph is relieved to have something that she can do. "I made lasagne last night, there's a stack of it in the fridge, and there's cookies and bread and heaps of fruit -- c'mon, I'll show you around, help you figure out where everything is..."

Suki looks reluctant to move at first.

She appreciates the offer, of course. She asked for food though, not a grand tour with someone she's really not sure any good can come from hanging around with. Steph seems nice enough when she's in control of her insecurities, but there can't be any proper friendship in their future with the Sokka situation the way it is. Can there?

She stalls by asking: "what's lasagne?"

"Pasta and beef," Steph explains, stretching while she waits for Suki to either get to her feet or not. Hands go back behind her head and then down some ridiculous comic-book-world degree to stretch out her spine. "And tomato sauce, and cream cheese sauce, in layers. Sokka likes it."

"Beef. That's sort of like cow-pig meat, right?"

That's as close a comparison as she had managed to figure out when Rei had tried to describe it back when they'd been scavenging for food in Tokyo.

"No wonder Sokka likes it," she chuckles. "If it's got meat in it..."

She trails off and sighs.

"Nevermind. It sounds good."

Noting Steph's extra-bendiness with a subtly interested eyebrow, Suki gets up and dusts herself off without revealing anything of her own capabilities.

"Don't worry about showing me around though. I think it would be better if I figured things out on my own."

"Yeah, I guess it would," Steph agrees, a little relieved that her overenthusiastic gesture of friendliness wasn't accepted. It might not have been a particularly fun tour, anyway.
