Katara is READY.

She can totally (nearly) waterbend well enough to heal, and she can totally (actually) leave the farm, and every day they wait is a day she's more nervous.

R-E-A-D-Y!

... and therefore, of course, she's sitting in the kitchen practicing bending the spilled water behind the sink and wishing she could eat the cookies Steph made.

The cookies smell delicious.

Sokka gives her a tired, vaguely annoyed look. "Yeah, okay, but let me ask you something first. Did you tell Suki and Toph they were coming with us?"

Katara nods, smile fading because he's annoyed.

"Of course? Why of course? How is this of course? Where is the of course?!"

Older or not, he will always be her brother.

Katara eyes him dubiously, leaning back on the table and swinging her legs.

CAN'T SHE HAVE FRIENDS NOW? IS THAT IT, HUH?

"So you invite them to help with this without telling your family? I don't even know them, Katara!"

Katara blinks at him.

It's not quite that she's oblivious, it's just that Katara doesn't pay much attention to her brother when she's focused on other people.

Which is all the time.

He's just there - he's always there. Sokka is part of the backdrop of her life.

Sokka sighs irritably and puts the cookie down to cross his arms over his chest. "Katara, Suki kissed me once almost four years ago and I've spoken to Toph like three times. It would've been nice to know about all this before Suki just informed me that she was coming and there was nothing I could do about it."

It had been so hard not to show her all the training he's learned over the years after that.

Katara thinks about this, frowning slightly.

Smile!

Sokka stares at her.

She's so-- so-- so Katara. It's comforting and infuriating at the same time.

"Why should they come?" he asks her quietly. "The more people, the more complicated it gets and I don't see why either of them should go with us."

Katara's lip slides out a little.

"You could have told me."

So he could maybe feel less bad about telling Steph it was family-only.

Katara wrinkles her nose, apologetically.

"Suki's idea?"

Apparently, everyone had left that out.

And Sokka's expression is struggling between stubbornness and relief at the idea that Toph could find Katara's body with bending only. "Yeah, but..."

She's his sister.

He's Sokka. He's background. She just assumes he knows things and is there for her - and never had any reason not to.

She looks up at him, all big blue eyes and hopeful expression.

She's so damn Katara.

Sokka sighs and turns to grab a cookie. "Fine. Whatever. We're almost ready to go and my car can handle a few more."

Katara says happily, glad he agreed.

"And Steph," he adds, suddenly not feeling even slightly bad about this. "Maybe Mel and the girls, too."

Katara frowns a little, considering this.
Maybe he shouldn't take those people! She hardly knows them! :O

Sokka will find a way to smack his discorporeal sister if she says that.

"We can pick up another car. Steph knows how to drive."

Which means he'd have to make the trip without Steph in the passenger seat, which he would really prefer if Suki and Toph were going to be there, too.

Katara's smile is sunny again. Sokka fixes everything!

"Ohhhh yeah, I do."

Otherwise, how will he keep from smacking his sister's smartass friends?

Katara grins at him, sitting up straighter.
He has a permission. Lucky him.

Yeah.

Sokka takes a few bites of his cookie. "I'll go talk to them about it. Are you ready to go soon? How's practice going?"

Katara says, beaming at him.

Ghostly hugs.

Sokka frowns - though the ghostly hugs ruin it some. Even if it makes him shiver, it's nice to have Katara trying to hug him.

"Well... yeah, okay, we can go but if you can't do it yet..."
