(no subject)

Chicago: still crumbled, still broken. Expedition Katara skirted it without needing to consult.

They've found a quiet field, sloping gently down to the shores of the lake. It's dry enough to set up camp again, all of them thankful to be finally out of the cars.

Katara is sitting by the water's edge, watching movement in the water, quiet and thoughtful. She hasn't said more than two words to anyone since the encounter with the cannibals, since healing Mel.

Steph, as per usual, is anything but quiet, chattering to Hana about everything and nothing as they set up the fire in preparation for roasting whatever the hunters find. Loo still won't leave Mel's side and Hana is grumpy about it, but willing to be distracted.

There's lots to be done now that they've finally reached their goal.

"I don't know about being your waiter," Sokka begins, eyeing her teasingly, "but there's plenty of food. And you don't have to eat down by the water, come up to the tents when you're not..."

"...um, working."

Toph smirks.

"I've made good progress, actually. Should have a result tomorrow."

"Really?"

There is the beginning of a kind of awe in her ability in Sokka's voice.

"Wow, Toph, that's great. I'll let Katara know, I think she and Suki are working on what to do next."

"Suki?" Toph repeats. "What does she know about Bending?"

Sokka stops himself from rolling his eyes - and then decides that since Toph can't see him do it, there's nothing wrong with completing the action. "Nothing," he replies. "But I guess she knows about that spirit water stuff."

"I know about the spirit water stuff," Toph points out. "I was there when Katara brought Aang back to life with it."

Sokka shrugs, looking over at her. "All three of you can figure it out then. Whatever works."

It doesn't matter so much to him who helps, since the important thing is that he can't.

Unwittingly, Toph mirrors the shrug.

"I don't know about waterbending. I just know what Katara can do."

Sokka shrugs again.

A couple of seconds later, he adds helpfully, "Whatever works."

"It'll work," Toph says. "Katara can do anything."

This time, perhaps wisely, Sokka doesn't say anything at all.

Besides, he's still got his dinner to eat.
