Last night was...

...last night was just what Mel needed to work out some of her issues right now :-D?

Since coming back, she's been doing rounds of the farm with a determined eye, making lists of things that need doing, doing some of the more urgent things; maybe she's spoken to you about what you need to do, but it's possible she hasn't yet caught upon all the gossip.

Now, as Hana and Loo play together in the grass, she's sitting and staring comtemplatively at a car that once flew. Funny how, even though one may have a genius mechanic for a brother and live with still more, there are some things for which help still cannot be asked for.

Mel wants to make it work again, and she's not sure where to start.

"Nothing I'd expect to be useful around a farm unless you're under siege. When Dynames is up and running again-- well, if you guys need any heavy lifting done, a mobile suit is usually good for that. Not much a sixty-foot-tall robot can't pick up."

"There's farmwork," Mel says. "Anyone can pull weeds and clean a room. You any good with tech?"

"Depends on the tech, but I'm a pretty quick study."

"Then check with the engineers if they've got anything needs help with," Mel says, with a nod towards the aircraft hangar.

"If not, I've got lots of chorse around the farm need doing. And if you can think of a way of getting this boy in the air, let me know."

"Will do." He smiles. "What, your car? I'm no mechanic, but what's it need?"

"Fuel," Mel says, irritable. "It's about three hundred years misplaced, and there's not exactly a rocketfuel station on every corner. I'm gonna hafta convert it to something we've got.

"And I'm not a mechanic."

"Huh," says Neil. "What a coincidence. Steve just did pretty much the same thing for my car a week ago."

He nods at a very streamlined black vehicle a few spots over.

"It's from the early 2100s. Electric. He converted it to run on energon, which is apparently something you guys have got lying around all over the place."

Excuse Mel while she facepalms.

"Thought the 'bots who used that had long gone. I'll hassle Steve, thanks."

"I haven't seen any bots, but I've seen Steve synthesize the stuff. You're welcome."

"So you're from the twenty-second cen?" Mel asks, following that train. "Closest to me I've met."

"Twenty-fourth. 2307, to be exact. The car dropped into my lap the day I got here. You?"

"2292."

Mel's marginally disappointed she's been out-futured.

"Me and and the car both, but I haven't been there for three years."

"Yeah? Any orbital elevators in your world?"

He doesn't expect a yes, but it's good to check.

"Spacells?"

Space Elevators are a science fiction inevitability, for this writer.

"Not near my City. Noram's got one out by the lakes."

"Noram? North America?" Just a guess. "Yeah, different worlds. The Americas are one political entity in mine, and if they distinguish it's usually by country, not continent."

Also, depending which lakes she means, her world may run on different laws of physics from his.

The Slayerverse runs on different laws of physics to everyone's universe.

"Noram and Westam. Two biggest countries on the continent. North and West, I guess."

The implication, of course, is that the USA split up at some point. Mel's from the North eastern part.

"Huh. In mine it's the Union, both continents. And their orbital elevator's in Taribia."

He's been there, but he doesn't mention this. Considering the circumstances.

"Not the same, then."

Mel shrugs. "I never saw the Spacelle anyway. Not for the poor folk."

"They're big landmarks in my world. The Union elevator would be visible from here on a clear day."

Shrug.

"I'm a city girl," Mel explains. "In my city you're doing well if you can see the next block."

"Air pollution or just tall buildings everywhere?"

"Both," Mel says. "Buildings're the sticker, though."

"Guess I've spent too long piloting mobile suits. I'm used to seeing things from a few hundred feet up."

Mel smirks so much she might be about to laugh.

"See, now I know you're not from my world. Few hundred feet? Lighweight."
