Mel was quiet partly because when you have superhearing, than tinnitus gets really bad. But also because her babies were crying and she wanted to repack herself into the back seat and rock them gently and distract them with Dino and a strange fluffy yellow blob she doesn't recognise, and clean the blood off them.

Part of the reason she remains quiet even afterwards, as Steph and Sokka gather the fuel up and prepare to drive on to Gotham, is that she had to clean blood off her daughters.

And that she's just murdered a human being. That too.

Steph nods, curling up around Hana's wriggly warm babybody and hugging her for a moment.

"m'kay."

It's enough for Steph, anyway. (She too has been giving it thought.)

Hana disapproves, vocally, of being cuddled when she wants to play with Dino, and demonstrates this by hitting Steph with said cuddly dinosaur. Steph grins and offers her more Twinkie, and thus balance is restored.

She glances around for Sokka, and finding that he's still out of earshot, adds, focused on Hana and Operation Feed Baby, "...you guys can stay here, if you want. Or go back to Kansas."

Loo, for some reason, also disapproves of Hana being cuddled. Or maybe of anything that Hana disapproves of, because she starts crying again while Mel struggles with a bottle of juice and a dinky cup.

"We don't want to stay here."

Yes, she's talking for Sokka. She's the boss, and he knows it.

"And we're not going back til Marie gets back. Anyway, you need a burglar."

"I know," Steph says to that last, voice small. "I want you to come. I just don't ... want you to think you have to."

She leans over towards Loo to offer pettings while Mel's busy with the drinks, other hand still occupied with Hana's Twinkie.

"...thanks."

Sokka told her he'd get Jack's shotgun onto her if she suggested it where he could hear, so she's pretty sure he agrees with Mel.

"What you want doesn't factor."

JUICE CUP VICTORY. Loo's making grabby hands already.

"We're not leaving you."

But she's still making plans for what to do after.

After is ... after.

She's pretty sure, by now, that they won't find anyone anyway. But she has to try. That hasn't changed.

Steph settles for kissing Hana's head instead of dumping baby to get up and hug Mel. Then she decides settling is silly, and shuffles around to sit beside Mel so she can lean against her and still keep Hana happy.

"I dunno what I did to deserve you guys," she says, half-teasing and yet deadly serious. "Can't get rid of you even with bikies and blowing up gas stations. Gosh."

"We're like a virus."

Loo sits back against Mom, drinking happily from her cup as Mel preps one for Hana.

"No getting rid of us."

It's probably unfair to say she's mostly there for Sokka, so Mel doesn't.

Mel's smart that way. Steph would go all sadfacey if she knew.

Hana babbles happily and tries to throw Dino at Loo. Steph grins, and just goes back to feeding.

It's not really a night for small talk, somehow.
