Mel was quiet partly because when you have superhearing, than tinnitus gets really bad. But also because her babies were crying and she wanted to repack herself into the back seat and rock them gently and distract them with Dino and a strange fluffy yellow blob she doesn't recognise, and clean the blood off them.

Part of the reason she remains quiet even afterwards, as Steph and Sokka gather the fuel up and prepare to drive on to Gotham, is that she had to clean blood off her daughters.

And that she's just murdered a human being. That too.

As a matter of fact, once Sokka looks up at her, his frown and drawn brows make it pretty clear that he doesn't. But he's not completely dense.

"...who, Steph? She checked my arm herself, she knows it's not infected."

Mel grins and wraps Hana up as thoroughly as possible without dislodging Dino.

"Yeah, but she's got special worry about other stuff. Don't expect me to be any more insightful than that. I'm me."

"...point," Sokka agrees, but he's still frowning, thoughtful. "I'd make you tell me more, but I know that-- well, you're you."

Hana yawns and gets special Momcuddles while she drifts off. Momcuddles interrupted only by a shoulder check.

"Is this new to her? I mean - I know she did the whole vigilante thing, but do you think she's taking today hard?"

Hana also gets special Uncle-tickles on her feet because there is very little in the world more adorable than baby feet.

"Yeah, it is. They didn't kill, her and Robin and all them. It was a big deal to keep people alive."

Which Sokka doesn't put a whole lot of stock in, if the 'bad guys' are killing people themselves.

"Oh."

Mel thinks about this. It did feel strange, killing someone today, but any guilt she has is outweighed by OMGLOO.

"Guess she's not happy with me, then."

Glancing up at her, Sokka frowns. "I don't think it's like it. I would've done the same thing if I'd been holding Loo, and I'm not totally sure Steph wouldn't have either. I think she's just kind of... freaked out about it. They never had to kill people."

"OK," Mel concedes, and leans on him some more.

"I'm still glad we're here."

"Glad you're here," Sokka replies, leaning back and resting his head on hers.

And tickles baby feet until Hana kicks a bit in her sleep.

"And the girls."

"It's green," Mel says, partly in awe still. "This is the best world yet. Including Haddyn."

"Oh man, that other Sokka went out and hunted and we had meat and there were leftovers and oh man, it was so good!"

Who's surprised what Sokka's most excited about here?

"You guys had meat? Fresh meat?"

Cue Mel staring, and maybe wishing she could disturb Hana to shouldercheck him again.

"Is it too late to swap?"

"Yes," Sokka informs her happily. "But I'll go out in the morning and see if I remember how to hunt."

"Maybe we could come with?"

Mel then thinks better of the plan. "Babies not good for stealthy, right? You have fun."

Sokka shrugs and glances back at the car. "You could always leave them with Steph if you want to come."

"I don't want to," Mel says.

What it is that she doesn't want to do, she leaves open.

Sokka's assuming it's leaving them with Steph. Or leaving them with anyone at all, basically.

So he nods and wraps an arm around her shoulders for a quick hug. "Should get some sleep," he says, giving her a nudge. "We should start going as soon as it gets light, make sure we have time to do more than get there - like find a place to sleep."

"I slept in the car," Mel points out, coming out of the hug just to lay Hana next to Loo.

Unconsciously, Dino is dropped when Hana snuggles against her sister instead.

"I'm on first. Wake you up in three hours."

"Okay." Sokka leans over to hold onto little girl hands for a moment before climbing to his feet. "Take watch in the car, though, okay? Just to be safe."

"I was planning on sitting on the car," Mel says honestly. "Give you guys room to stretch out."

Sokka frowns but does, at least, attempt to consider this. "Will you leave the girls in with us?"

"Course."

Mel grins and does check his shoulder this time. "Keep them warm."

Sokka rolls his eyes but allows the shoulder-checking, if only because Mel's agreed with him on something. "'Course."

Mel grins and scoops the girls both up gently from the ground. they protest sleepily, but don't wake.

"Shall I tuck you all in?"

"I'm gonna pretend like you're just talking about Hana and Loo, but Steph probably wouldn't mind either."
