This is all so far out of Katara's control!

It is probably that nobody is venturing this far from the household without a reason. Katara has a reason: her face is starting to rot off, and she hasn't been able to find anyone to drain, and she's so terribly afraid that Sokka will come back any moment and find her, and she can't avoid Toph for much longer without the other girl getting suspicious, and and and it's all so hard being a deadly killer zombie and NOBODY UNDERSTANDS HER and --

Anyone who has wandered these fields over may find a small, foul-smelling, rotting lump of girl sitting on an abandoned horsetrough and wasting precious moisture by crying.

Good luck to them.

"So you... do something with water to fix yourself?" he prompts, ignoring the part about her being important. Everyone's important.

Katara nods, and finally sinks down to sit again, pointedly distant from him... but still close enough to talk quietly.

"I Bend blood, too."

"Really." He glances up at her. "So that's what you meant about needing to find someone?"

"Only a little," Katara says, and sniffs again. "I don't - it's not a bad thing. It doesn't hurt."

Her, anyway.

"Doesn't hurt?" he says evenly. "I'll take your word for it. If I had blood..."

Katara nods, not meeting his eyes. But that's just because she's looking away over the fields, that's all.

"So how did you get brought back?" he asks. "Grieving family, or a curse?"

"My brother saved me," Katara says, smiling suddenly, fond. "He found me and he helped me bring myself back, really. I'm a Waterbender. I healed myself."

"He found you?" Dead Boy says, eyebrows raised. "You were a ghost? Or did he pull an Orpheus?"

"I didn't pull anything," Katara says, frowny again. "I healed my body. I was a ghost, and he took me to where my body was, and Toph pulled it out, and I healed it with the spirit water I had from the Northern Water Tribe oasis."

DUH, Dead Boy. It's so simple.

"Ah, all right." He nods. "But now you're having... cravings?"

Katara scowls and stares at the ground. "No, I'm not. I don't know what you mean."

"Yes, you do", he persists. "You're not the person you were. What is it you need? Blood, brains, water?"

Katara pokes a rock with her foot.

"Water. But not just any water. 's got to be kind of like spirit water. Special."

"So that's why it has to come from people", he surmises.

"I'll fix them," Katara assures him.

Dead Boy looks at her sadly. "How are you going to do that?"

"When I find out how to fix me," she says, shining with blind faith. "I'll fix them too. You'll see. I'll heal everyone, I'll put it all back just how it was."

"They're dead, kid", he points out gently. "Unless they're all ghosts, that's not going to be easy."

"I can do it," Katara says stubbornly. "I know I can."

"If you really think so... I'm good with the dead. I can get them back for you."

Katara's stubbornness isn't going anywhere. "I don't need any help," she says sharply.

"One way or another, yeah, you do. Or are you a summoner as well?"

"I don't need anyone," Katara insists, scowling at him. "I can do it fine on my own. I did me, didn't I?"

"You were already here. And I have to tell you, you don't look exactly perfect."

Nor does he, but he knows that.
