There's a flash and a bang and a very confused man with ridiculous hair appears, hovering a few feet above the rubble of a destroyed parking lot.

Hey, when you can cast illusions, you don't need a comb.

"...The hell?" Sylar starts to say, and before he's quite done with the sentence it's President Nathan Petrelli who's making the quizzical exclamation to empty air, settling gently to the ground.

You can never be too careful.

"I was never there. I--"

--found Nathan in time to kill him, wearing the face of his brother; the look in his eyes was priceless, and the sound of Peter Petrelli losing the last shred of control and taking out a city with his incompetence more so--

"--heard it all from Peter. After."

Or covered it up, faked his own death and took on the face of a rising-star politician, fought his way to more kinds of power than he'd ever dreamed.

Nathan nodded, and harshly stated, "Because you went into the helicopter with Ma, and left before Peter could explode."

"You think he lied to me? He's--" (an imbecile) "--my brother. If Peter says Sylar exploded, I'm going to believe him."

Nathan remarked, "I know Pete, and no, he's not the liar in the family. He's one of the only honest ones."

"Of course you know him."

The facade's anger dims slightly.

"Then you know he'd never have faked that story."

Sylar, on the other hand, did so with impunity.

Nathan seriously replied, "I'd trust my brother sooner than even myself at times. And I know how long he was afraid of that explosion. Sylar was just some murdering psychopath who tried to kill him once, but he wasn't that much of a threat in the end."

"As I said, things have gone differently for the two of us."

"Extremely different. I'm even gave up my Congressional seat," Nathan admitted.

"Noble of you."

It doesn't even sound like sarcasm.

"Didn't matter anymore. I don't think I was really elected anyway, but it wasn't that important in the end."

"I've managed to do a lot of good in the world, on the path I chose."

Where you define doing a lot of good to mean accumulating a lot of ~~brainz~~ power.

"Considering what the price would have been, I find it hard to believe. Nothing could be worth half of New York being sacrificed, even under the guise of healing the world."

"I didn't choose to blow up New York. Sylar did."

Ahahahaha.

"I chose to do the best I could with the aftermath."

...the funny part is how true that is, if you turn your head and squint.

"You could have stopped it, you chose to step aside and let it happen. What did happen after that then? With the rebuilding and your administration?"

"It's been five years. A lot of things have changed."

He sighs heavily.

"Doesn't matter anymore. It's been made clear to me that this isn't the world I know. The old rules don't apply. I'm no longer President."

Perhaps he should look into discarding this face in favour of a new one. Then again, perhaps not.

Surprised by the five year admission.

"We never were. Not really. And no, this world's different. But it's going to need rebuilding all the same."

"True."

Sylar smiles.

You could consider it companionable.

"Leadership."

Wait for it...

"Why don't you give it a try?"

Small smile back at that, "Already came to a decision about that." He then started flying higher in the air again.

And the man on the ground is content to watch him go.

Killing and impersonating the same man twice might get tiresome, though on the flip side, it would be rather easier in this new setting.
