Jack is driving along one of the many roads on this big ol' wide continent in the Coraline, with all the windows open and a self-satisfied grin on his face. There's a bass guitar in the back, along with a couple amps (one of which actually goes up to 11 - he found the best); his cutlasses and guns are resting happily on the passenger seat and he's whistling while he looks out for other useful things to bring back to the farm.

(He's also looking for a friend he's missed recently)

There's no joy like the simple joys, and of them, Jack's favourite has always been the open ~~sea~~ road, knowledge of being useful to his friends, and a warm woman waiting for when he's done roaming.

Mai considers for a moment. Eventually she nods. "Probably for the best." There's still Sokka(s) to consider, after all.

She really wants to collect her knives, clean them, and check them for damage. But despite fighting together, she doesn't really trust Jack.

Jack's smile fades a little. But he does sit down where he is - not near the truck - and pulls a cloth out of his belt to clean his own blades.

There's a fallen knife to his side. He flicks it across the road to land near her.

It takes quite a bit of self control to suppress a grimace when Jack touches her knife. And when it skips lightly across the ground her lip twitches.

That doesn't stop her from leaning down to pick up the blade and carefully, pointedly, inspect it for nicks.

Jack smirks again.

"It's not harmed."

So THERE!

It's not. Which doesn't stop Mai from scowling. "I can't replace them here." Which means damage and loss are not options.

"So use them sparingly," Jack suggests. "Or find yourself a sword or two."

Mai's face expresses her distaste. "Swords are..." she trails off. Inelegant is what she means. Also: obvious.

Jack hums in amusement.

"Effective. Fun. And with correct care, infinitely reusable."

He stands and twirls the swords lightly in his hands, sliding them under his sash finally - and almost elegantly, for what it's worth.

"Messy," Mai decides, eying Jack critically. While Mai may not be exactly clean and pretty herself at the moment, she hasn't gotten any blood on her from the fight.

Keeping the distance open allows you to stay nicely clean.

"Messier than letting another draw away attentions," Jack remarks.

Mai would be significantly messier if he hadn't been there.

Mai shrugs. It's not like she disagrees with Jack's point or anything. She's not above taking advantage of someone else providing a convenient distraction.

Jack passes her on the way to the truck and watches her carefully as he does so.

"Have you a message for your countryfolk?"

"No." And even if she did have some message, she probably wouldn't pass it through Jack.

"Then I shall forget I met you."

Actually, Jack will see if they recognise the name 'May' and if safe for both, point them towards her.

"Good." She doesn't bother with any pleasantries like 'have a safe trip' or 'nice to meet you'. She's never seen much point in being insincere in that way.

There's a long pause before Jack drives off. Really, he's using what little prophetic power he has to check she'll be at least passably safe.

After assuring himself she won't be joining him, he climbs into the truck and drives off, good mood absent.
