Mel instantly regretted complaining to Sokka about the lack of enemies, because it had been followed pretty quickly by someone in the farm having his hand sliced off.
She hadn't seen Jack since then - bastard must be avoiding her, and she wouldn't blame him - but she also hasn't properly spoken to Oliver. So while she hasn't got the full story, she's just in a really really bad mood. and when Mel's in a bad mood, things get trashed.
The thing in question is out in the field most people have been using for training, and is little more than a pillow tied to one of the trees dotted around the borders. or rather, it's remarkable less, now, as Mel's worked her way through the fabric in a cloud of feathers, and now her knuckles are beginning to bleed from the bark.
Someone might want to stop her before she knocks the whole tree down.

Steph stops by the edge of the field by the babies, eyes the furious Slayer and the little girls who think this is GREAT ENTERTAINMENT, and looks rather worried.
"Something wrong?"
no subject
"You seen Jack around?"
no subject
"... what's Jack done?"
no subject
"Cut off Oliver's hand," she provides helpfully.
no subject
"... our Jack? The one we know?"
But she likes him!
no subject
"Only person matches the description," Mel says, bluntly. "Now he's run off."
Never occured to her that the pirate might not think it a good idea to hang around while Oliver's besmirching his good name.
no subject
"Maybe it was ... some kind of impostor? Or maybe he had a reas-- shit, is Oliver all right? Nobody's dead, right?"
no subject
"He'd better have a reason."

"Just like to work of steam," is Mel's excuse. "How yu settling in?"
no subject
"I... guess I'm doin' okay. This place is so flat. But folks're... different." Which is good.
no subject
"Different good, right?"
You're not about to have your hand off?
no subject
"Well, nobody's yelled nothin' at me yet. And folks talk t'me." She half-shrugs. "'s kinda weird, I guess. But okay. And there's a priest." That's important.

So that must've been quite the attack, that did that to her face. And the scar on her frequently exposed midriff that looks like a caesarian.
"You, uh - spoke to him recently?"
no subject
"Just met him a couple days ago, yeah."
no subject
"Might wanna look in onhim again. There's been- a thing."

"EEEEEEEEE!" says Hana while Loo claps in excitement, grabbing at the falling feathers.
"And this is why you are going to have many different training teachers," Sokka notes as he sits down behind the girls and puts a hand to each of their heads. "So that you don't get into the bad habit of misdirected anger."
But he's also looking at her worriedly, 'cause-- Mel.

Then Mel drops down in front of him and the girls, keeping her hands to herself.
"Ask you a question?"
no subject
The girls, however, would like to play with the strange red things at the end of mommy's wrists.
"No, never," Sokka answers solemnly. This is a 'yes' in Sokka-ese.

She sucks on a knuckle and pulls Hana into her lap for a cuddle. Mel's benefit, not Hana's.
no subject
"No."
The pause was to digest what she'd said, not because Sokka had to think about Jack. Jack doesn't strike him as the sort to chop off hands, er-- ever.
And yet...
Sokka frowns and pulls Loo into his lap before she can get jealous. "...but the last time I saw him, he was kind of giving me hell for not taking one of Azula's friends back with me and-- otherSokka. So who knows what kind of judgment he has?"
no subject
"Was he angry with you?"
no subject

Mel pulls Hana closer, kissing her hair. Azula's friends will never be welcome around her.
"I just - I dunno. This was over a friend of his Oliver says is evil."
