Dean's done with the library. Done with the whole stupid city. He's got a carful of books and no intention of hanging around any longer.

But he's also got to find Jack, Jo and Rachel, and he doesn't really know where to start. He's heading down the street in the vague direction of Jo's hole-in-the-wall apartment, hoping the others will somehow be there too.

They've got work to do.

Rachel stiffens. Not much, but Tobias will certainly be able to tell.

Dean will just see her scowl.

"Fine," she snaps, grabbing the bottle by her side and standing. "I didn't realize you and Jack were best friends now. Have fun."

Tobias flares his wings out and prepares to launch himself.

He shoots a last look at Dean. <Asshole,> he says privately so Rachel won't hear him.

Dean just rolls his eyes.

Christ, Rachel is crazier than ever.

Tobias launches himself forward, sweeping by within inches of Dean's face as he gets himself into the air.

"Hey, settle," Dean snaps at the bird, fingers twitching. "Who's the asshole here?"

He bets that stupid bird would taste really good in a pie. Mmmm, pie.

Oh, he did not.

Rachel whirls, eyes narrowed and glaring daggers. "Hey, you're the one acting like a jerk. Don't get mad at him just because he's smart enough not to talk to you."

Tobias wheels over in a tight turn so that he can glare at Dean. If the jerk doesn't want Rachel's help, then he's an idiot.

<Still you,> Tobias tosses off lightly (and a bit smugly) as he beats his wings to circle near Rachel.

"Jesus Christ," Dean mutters, glaring at Rachel. "What are you guys, high school kids?"

"You just called him an asshole!" Rachel snaps. "I'd think the high school kid would be the one that insults somebody else for not talking to them!"

Grumpy Rachel is grumpy.

Tobias doesn't say anything to either of them. He just circles, gaining a bit of altitude.

"Oh, Jesus, how lame is that?" Dean stares at her. "The bird calls me an asshole, then it acts like an asshole, and you get pissed when I return the favour?

"I hope that fucking library has good recipes for bird pie."

Rachel glares back, mouth opened to snap and--

blinks.

Her head tilts slowly to look up at the hawk, starting to smirk.

"And you didn't think I should hear you insult someone, why?"

<You didn't need me to tell you something you already knew,> Tobias says for both of them to hear.

Dean scowls.

There's no reason he should care about being called an asshole by a stupid bird who thinks Rachel's -- augh, whatever, it doesn't matter.

"Don't you got somewhere to go?" he asks them both, annoyed.

"It's just cool to hear you insult somebody," Rachel points out, grinning up at him.

Dean gets another glare, though it's much softer. "Good luck explaining this. Try not to die while I'm not there to protect your ass."

Tobias doesn't have anything to add to that. Rachel is, after all, right.

Dean is a moron, obviously.

<That guy is a moron,> he tells Rachel privately.

Dean rolls his eyes.

Yeah, like it's going to be so difficult to say to Jo 'Rachel wanted to bring along a stranger and I said no.'

... it won't, right?

Rachel turns and walks away, eyes flicking up to Tobias. She smirks and winks at him.

She's still not happy, but the idea of Tobias calling someone an asshole has her in a better mood.
