Going back means prepping.

And prepping mean guns.

And Jo? Likes guns.

Like anyone, Tobias is good at some things and terrible at others. One of the things he's good at, though, is observation. And he's noticed that Rachel has been... preoccupied recently. He's perched on a small tree thinking about this, trying to decide if he should ask what's up.

He won't, of course. That's not really how they operate. But he does think about it.

Rachel has been busy. Actually, Rachel hasn't been seen much around Metropolis. In fact, Rachel hasn't been seen much of anywhere... aside from Detroit.

She comes back to the apartment in Metropolis at night, because Tobias sleeps there, too, and would worry if she didn't. And while she's never seen him, Rachel has a sneaking suspicion that she's occasionally followed to Detroit, and watched. Even though all she's really doing there is watching, too.

Unless, you know, something happens. And she's in a position to do something about it. Things like that happen, you know.

(very often)

Sometimes, they happen a little more unexpectedly than she'd like, where she's not in a position to help someone being targeted but is actually the target. The things attacking her rarely ever know exactly what they're getting into and she's yet to deal with any serious damage from any of them. But today, one of them got lucky and surprised her. And the morphing power, while useful and incredibly powerful, is not an exact science.

Rachel has been unable to morph or demorph without reopening a four inch gash across her collarbone and chest. In her human body.

It's getting complicated. Not to keep it covered - her wardrobe has always been modest, if stylish. And not to keep it clean - Rachel is nothing if not fastidious in her appearance.

It's that she literally cannot morph until she heals and it is taking too damn long.

It's only been about two hours since she got the cut, of course. And right now, she's standing in an abandoned drug store back in Metropolis, in the back room of the pharmacy. She's stripped off her outer shirt, standing there in jeans and the top half of her morphing outfit. The gash is large and ugly but not dangerous, not when she's surrounded by bottles of alcohol and sterile bandages.

No, the real problem is... the gash is going to require stitches. Rachel has only performed stitches twice in her entire life, both times on someone else.

She's eyeballing the sealed pack of needle and thread with a deep frown. There's no way she's coming out of this without a scar.

Stupid Andalites and their imperfect science.

Shit happened. As it tends to. It's not all that surprising in concept.

In reality, Rachel's still startling every time there's a flash of light, just in case someone is spontaneously combusting.

There are bigger things to worry about, though. Like what exactly they're supposed to do now with the information they've been given. Rachel's stance on this is as obvious as ever, meaning that as soon as they've left Dreamer, she's walking back to the building she shares with Tobias trying to figure out a plan.

Tobias and Rachel are using Lucy's morph again for the speed on a little trip down to Texas. Tobias is getting a feel for the dragon body. It's rather interesting, really. Power and grace and the ever-present hunger...

He and Rachel stoop simultaneously toward a deserted town. He's morphing almost as soon as he hits the ground.

There's an interesting little group making their way toward the Cooper farm. It consists of three smallish dragons and what looks like an enormous ball of light.

No one's said much on the way back. For Rachel, it's out of frustration. They took it down and that's a victory, but they didn't get the father, the guy that started the whole thing, and that's making her tack it down as a failure.

But she'll mention that when they land.

There! Up in the sky! It's a bird!

Well, it's two birds, within a few hundred yards of each other.

A hawk with a rust-red tail and a bald eagle are making their way toward the farm. There aren't too many words passing between them, other than Rachel's occasional comment regarding what the plan is. Both sets of sharp eyes are on the lookout for Lucy.

Rachel's half-hoping the dragon-woman managed to scrounge up a few more friends to help out, and half-hoping she didn't. Too many people and someone would have to be a leader.

Aximili wasn't entirely sure what had been happening before the bang and the flash. It was like something in between death and a fate worse than death... like being Controlled. "Assimilated", The One had called it. It was the sort of word a Yeerk would use, although Ax was fairly certain that whatever The One was, it wasn't a Yeerk.

And it wasn't trying to assimilate him any more. At least, not that he could see. In fact, all Ax could see was what appeared to be a human city. Not the sort of thing one expects to see when they're dying in a spaceship. But having had more than enough experience ending up in places he didn't intend, Ax reacts quick, finding a secluded place to morph human.

Thus begins his Amazing Wandering Around Springfield Adventure. If only Ax knew he were in the home of that wonderful four-fingered yellow human family. Or had some cinnamon buns. Or an idea why he was still alive.

Well... if he had to stay human, at least he could do something about the lack of cinnamon buns.

Every so often, Tobias just needs to get out and stretch his wings. He doesn't mind sticking close to Rachel, but sometimes he just needs to fly.

So about once a week he just takes off. He doesn't say anything to Rachel. That's not really how their relationship works. Today, without saying anything to him, she's joined him.

He doesn't mind. If he had a human face he might even smile a bit.

He doesn't have a direction in mind, but soon they're flying over relatively untraveled roads, passing abandoned farms.

December in Kansas is nothing like December in California.

Translation: Rachel is freezing.

And also in the meadow she's been sleeping in for weeks with Tobias, rolling up her sleeping bag and packing a backpack.
[identity profile] whoiwasmeant2be.livejournal.com
Tobias doesn't like Metropolis all that much, but it's not as bad as it could be. After all, it's not really a... metropolis. Not a bustling one. Sure there are tons of refugees, but that's just a drop in the bucket of what the city is designed to handle.

He's spent the past few days watching Rachel work out. She runs hard, practices gymnastics, and generally pushes herself. He's not surprised by the pushing, but it's new to see her working out her human body. Not that he disagrees with her reasoning, of course.

And it's been nice just to be near her again. He feels like the three years without her were a bad dream.

He's been out hunting, and now he's gliding back to their most recent crash space.

Tobias was off hunting, which meant Rachel had some time to do some training. Her gun is at the bottom of her bag back at their campsite - which is where it's been since even before Tobias arrived. She hasn't lifted it in ages, much less practiced shooting, but there have been other things to do.

Forget the job at the farm. She didn't understand it anyway.

Morphing was all well and good but the difficult part only lasted thirty seconds, a few minutes at most. After that, her mind is free to wander. Rachel wants to be distracted, occupied but hiding behind the mind of her morph is... not an option. Not right.

It was stupid. A couple of ghosts and she already knew she couldn't fight them. What was she going to do? Research? Watch and learn? They didn't need her for that.

Gymnastics was good to keep her mind occupied. If she worked hard enough, she'd be too focused on her body to think much. And things are fine anyway, she'll stress herself out over nothing.

She didn't want to go anyway.

She'll work up to gymnastics. Right now, she's running on the road out of Metropolis, working up her heart rate, stretching before trying anything new.

It was a stupid job.

Dean's done with the library. Done with the whole stupid city. He's got a carful of books and no intention of hanging around any longer.

But he's also got to find Jack, Jo and Rachel, and he doesn't really know where to start. He's heading down the street in the vague direction of Jo's hole-in-the-wall apartment, hoping the others will somehow be there too.

They've got work to do.

Rachel hasn't stepped foot inside a building since arriving back in Metropolis, which serves a couple of purposes. First, it should make it much easier for Tobias to find her. Second... it's driving her completely mad, since she can't go looking for him. She's been on the roof of a particularly tall building trying to occupy herself.

It only takes about an hour before she realizes she's in the wrong form for him to really recognize her.

There's a grizzly bear impatiently pacing the roof.

"Full emergency power to the engines," Jake says. "Ram the Blade ship."

Tobias smiles as Jake gives the final order. At least he smiles as much as a hawk can smile. <Rachel,> he says privately, a habit he never broke himself of, even though she hasn't been there to hear him for years. <I'm coming.>

The blinding flash and deafening bang are impressive, but somehow Tobias had expected something even bigger as the two ships collided.

He also isn't expecting to find himself five hundred feet and plummeting toward the trees. Partially because there aren't a lot of trees in space, but mostly because he was pretty sure death wouldn't be so similar to life.

Instincts kick in and his wings snap, pulling him into a glide.

He banks into a thermal to gain some altitude and begins to circle. What in the world just happened?

[Tobias is a red-tailed hawk. And he's currently flying over the Pacific coast somewhere in Oregon.]
