Tobias was off hunting, which meant Rachel had some time to do some training. Her gun is at the bottom of her bag back at their campsite - which is where it's been since even before Tobias arrived. She hasn't lifted it in ages, much less practiced shooting, but there have been other things to do.

Forget the job at the farm. She didn't understand it anyway.

Morphing was all well and good but the difficult part only lasted thirty seconds, a few minutes at most. After that, her mind is free to wander. Rachel wants to be distracted, occupied but hiding behind the mind of her morph is... not an option. Not right.

It was stupid. A couple of ghosts and she already knew she couldn't fight them. What was she going to do? Research? Watch and learn? They didn't need her for that.

Gymnastics was good to keep her mind occupied. If she worked hard enough, she'd be too focused on her body to think much. And things are fine anyway, she'll stress herself out over nothing.

She didn't want to go anyway.

She'll work up to gymnastics. Right now, she's running on the road out of Metropolis, working up her heart rate, stretching before trying anything new.

It was a stupid job.

Another smirk, another shrug. It wasn't supposed to be fun, and it didn't have to be. Not if it was just good to be around him.

She blinks at the question, though. "Is what helping?"

Jo shifts her weight, with an amused curl to her lips.

"Resettling." To the world for him, to a three years later him for her.

Not that Jo had stopped to ask an version of Dean or Sam how they were doing with her.

Rachel makes a face and gives Jo a look.

"Because settling is exactly what I wanted to be doing."

Tobias was... she's not sure what Tobias is thinking anymore.

That Jo doesn't make the 'we're all settling for something here' comment that beats the doorway of her lips says something of her opinion of Rachel more than the world.

"He know that?"

She knew that Rachel would beat her for it?

"He knows," she answered, a little more sharply than she meant to. He should, the years they spent together.

Jo could be pot kettle, about the Field and Lawrence.

But it's early. ~~And she likes her ass where it is.~~

"What happened with him and Dean?"

They can save the furious exchange of insults for a day when they're more bored.

Rachel shakes her head, leaning back against a tree and frowning irritably. "Jeez, I don't even know. Tobias just glared at him for most of it, then Dean got all pissy that I wouldn't go to the farm without him, then they're sniping at each other out of nowhere. It wasn't like either of them."

So far as she knew, regarding Dean.

"Well, I don't Tobias, but Dean's an asshole and an idiot without provocation," Jo said, with an oddly annoyed and indulgent expression.

She, also, doesn't believe that he doesn't trust Rachel.

"Maybe he's got a fear of birds he hasn't revealed."

Jo's smirking at the sheer impossibility.

Well, birds do fly. It's a shame neither of the girls know how important that is to Dean.

Rachel smirked, amused. "Maybe. If he really wants to be afraid of Tobias, he just has to ask him to morph. Watching a hawk morph can be way weirder than watching me do it."

Jo's brow wrinkled.

"He morphs from hawk? I didn't know you could shift in the middle of them."

She's thinking that might look odd, too, trying imagine the explode-y feet and feathers.

Rachel's smile fades into a hard set of her jaw and she nods. "Remember when I told you there's a time limit to morphing? More than two hours and you're stuck? People who do that, they're called Nothlits."

She tilts her head back toward the trees, voice carefully even. "Tobias is a Nothlit that regained the ability to morph. He can still be his human self, but it's just a morph. Two hours without returning to hawk and he's stuck again."

Which leads directly back to: why hadn't he rebonded to being human again?

"That's gotta complicate things."

That's a good question, Jo. Don't ask it unless you'd like some bruises.

Rachel can't help it, though, not with that comment: she bursts out laughing.

"Things are always complicated, Jo," she laughs, shaking her head at her-- friend, yeah, they're friends. "Even when you think they're not. That wasn't the weirdest thing."

No, dating a hawk wasn't the weirdest thing. Even if it made her sigh as soon as she thought the words.

Thankfully, Jo's graceless and crass and not dumb.

Jo snorted, settling for crossing her arms as she smirked, glad that whatever this was Rachel was able to laugh about it. "Really? Then what was?"

Rachel shook her head immediately, nose wrinkled. "God, if I ever start keeping a scale on that, throw me in a padded room. Most of the time, people were trying to forget what we did not put a score on it."

"Padded room, check. Do you need windows?"

Yep, she's cheeky. She's good at it, too.

And she likes Rachel. Shhh.

Rachel's fine with cheeky. She grins at it.

"Well, how else do you expect me to escape from it once I'm in there?"

"Well, me, of course."

Jo raised one hand, gesturing to her chest.

"I'd smuggle you nail files in your oranges."

"And I'd come out with a fantastic manicure," Rachel replies smugly, beaming and waving perfect nails.

"Like always," Jo laughed.

"Don't be jealous, it's not flattering."

Even if she's suddenly flashing back to slumber parties and homemade manicures done with Cassie or her sisters.

But that's a girl thing, not a warrior thing. And besides, where do you find nail polish in an apocalypse?

"You were just wandering around outside?"

In rundown stores! But it might be cracked and drying as they speak!

"I got tired of the city and there not being a new hunt. It's not exciting but its better than looking for someone to make into a stain on the alley cement."

Rachel nods, thoughtful, lips twisting.

"...so can we go do something fun that doesn't end in me getting felt up while you smirk at me?"

No more clubs. Rachel is adamant about this.

Jo smirked again, just at the reference.

"Yeah. No more clubs for you." Beat. "Did you have something in mind?"

Rachel smirked and shook her head, despite the reference. "The last time I went out for fun was years ago, and there aren't even any movie theaters around. Or I could go back a few more years and try to remember what I did at my last slumber party. Or," she smirked evilly, "we could go shopping, I know how you love that."
