"So we're really on, now? And people can talk back?"

"Yes! Hello! Hello!"

"Shh! Quiet, I need to talk. Um... Hello... out there. (shit, that sounded stupid.) Um. This is... uh, this is New York City, uh, calling. I guess. Anyone there?"

"Hello!"

"God, nobody's going to talk to us. We sound like a couple of dumbasses."

"Hello?" Steph is sitting on the roof of the farm house with her ham radio.

"This is the Cooper farm."

"OH MY GOD!"

"Hello! Hello thekooper Farm! How are you?"

"Quiet, Kern. Um... hi! Wow. That's... that's that place in Kansas, right?"

"That would be us, yes." Steph giggles a little bit, listening.

"Wow. Is it really as flat out there as- nevermind. Hey, you guys don't happen to have like a current calendar or anything, do you? It's pretty obvious it's either winter or a new ice age here, but I'm going nuts trying to pin the date down."

"You would not believe how flat it is." Steph pauses to think back. "Er... according to the locals, we should be just after the new year."

"Shit, that late?! Man... We missed Christmas and everything. This place is depressing."

"Jessica! What's 'New Year'?"

"...I'll explain later, Kern. How's life lookin' out there in Kansas? I hear you all don't have as much crazy shit as we do."

"Nah, there's some kind of force field or something that keeps people from just popping in. Kinda weird, but, hey, better then the frozen wastes of Canada."

"Man, we need some of that here. The castle and the subways are pretty OK, but outside there's still murderplants and all that. And that crazy bum. At least we get electricity now, thanks to this guy."

"Hello!"

"Well, happy new year, I guess. Hope this one sucks less than the last one did for this place."

"Gotta be better. No way it can be worse."

She sighs.

"We got lucky, Kansas is pretty well running still. And a lot of people seem to be showing up here, someone out there is telling them it's a safe place."

"I heard that!" Jessica agrees.

"Nyoo York is safe," Kern announces. "I will keep safe!"

"I think there are other people making kind of a bigger impact there, Kern, but good job, I guess... Whoa, whoa, no, it is NOT hugs time."

After a brief struggle: "Yeah, I'd consider going that direction, but... I guess I'm kinda settled in here. And there's all kinds of free stuff, even with half the city being demolished."

"Doing a lot of looting then?" There is disapproval in her voice.

"Does it count as looting if everyone in the city is a ghost now?"

"..."

Steph debates this with herself.

"I guess it's just survival."

"Unless you think that dead people need these space heaters more than our super-skinny battery with no shirt... There aren't even cops out here. There's our superhero, but I don't think she cares much."

"You guys have a superhero? Who?"

"Yeah, in from over there, actually. Kate's her name. Dunno her superhero name."

"Kate! I know Kate!"

"Yeah, we know. You're the one she almost smacked that time."

"Don't think i know any kates."

"Huh, for real? I thought it was like Jessica- everywhere you go, there's at least two people around with that name."

"Well, okay, I know some Kates, but none in the superhero biz." She's from far before Bat-Lesbian.

"What, you got like a rolodex or something?"

"..Kinda."

She has an Oracle, it's much better.

"Wait... and that means there's more here. Holy shit, this place just keeps getting crazier."

"Around the farm, and metropolis, we got, like, thirty or forty?"

"Holeeee shit! You guys all invade from Planet Krypton, or what?!"

"... Only Superman."

"That's a joke. Please tell me that's a joke."

"No, why would it be a joke?"

"Superman. Red BVDs, blue spandex, goofy-ass cape?"

"Yes, but he's ditched the suit currently."

"He's flying around naked?!"

Steph can't help but sigh. "No, he usually wears pants. Has a thing for being shirtless though."

"...I was going to say something about not being in Kansas anymore, but... Man, this place is crazy."

"We have not been to Kansas."

"...No, Kern, it's an expression."

"... I actually am in Kansas, so I can't say it."

"Yeah, my point." Sigh.

"Well, thanks for your time. I better get going- it's about lunch time here. Um, I guess maybe we'll catch you later?"

"Goodbye!"

"Sure thing, I'm usually around."
