There's an interesting little group making their way toward the Cooper farm. It consists of three smallish dragons and what looks like an enormous ball of light.

No one's said much on the way back. For Rachel, it's out of frustration. They took it down and that's a victory, but they didn't get the father, the guy that started the whole thing, and that's making her tack it down as a failure.

But she'll mention that when they land.

Rachel stares, eyes slowly widening. Not out of shock.

In angry, defensive, hurt rage.

"Do this to you?! To you?!" Her voice lifts into a shout, completely ignoring the farmhouse or any people outside. "You start all these weird, stupid arguments and you morph human to make a point, you tell me that you've changed and it's your fault that you're not happy with me, and I'm doing something to you?!"

"Our--" Tobias cuts himself off. He knows he can't win a fight with her. He never could. And losing this one might mean losing everything that matters.

So he snaps his mouth shut and shakes his head sadly.

"No, god damn it, Tobias!" Rachel snaps, facing him head-on, treating it like a battle more than a fight. "Don't do that, don't censor yourself or cut yourself off! Just tell me what you want!"

There's so little she wouldn't do for him if he'd ask.

Tobias steps forward, movements jerky and angry and his hand flashes up to catch in her hair and pull her forward into a violent kiss.

...she wasn't expecting that. And if that wasn't obvious enough with the way she goes rigid in his arms, then the way she pushes back to stare at him should be.

Even if she can't quite ask the question in her mind.

For one split second his expression is nothing but pain. That she'd push him away. That in his moment of reaching out she would pull back.

It's a sign of how out of practice he's gotten with human expressions that it takes him any time at all before he smooths his expression into a blank one. He hopes she doesn't notice.

He's almost sure she does.

She did. And it's barely a fraction of a second before she responds.

Rachel's hands find his shoulders and she pulls him back. It's funny, in a way she doesn't recognize, that he'd kiss her violently. Her kiss is hard but only in intensity, eyes closed and chin tilted.

There's a height difference between them, but that's always been there - it's easy to ignore.

This time it's Tobias who freezes in place. It takes nearly a second for his brain to catch up and for his arms to wrap around her as tightly as he can get them. He leans into her hungrily.

And for the first time since he arrived in this crazy universe, Tobias allows himself to think that maybe, just maybe, he really can have the most important thing in his life back.

He's had her for years. Where Rachel's felt at times that all she was to him was a leash, something keeping him from the sky, she knows she lost her heart to him when they were thirteen, maybe even before their first trip to the Yeerk Pool. There's no going back from that.

Only forward.

It's a while before Tobias pulls back a little. Just far enough to try to catch his breath and speak.

"I've missed you, Rachel." His voice has changed. It's as if he's talking to her for the first time in years.

It's a bigger thrill than any battle and it's words more than the kiss that did it. Rachel laughs, soft and breathless and wraps her arms around him, bowing her head. He'd changed long before she died and in four words, it feels like she has him back.

"I missed you, too," she murmurs.
