(no subject)

Mel was quiet partly because when you have superhearing, than tinnitus gets really bad. But also because her babies were crying and she wanted to repack herself into the back seat and rock them gently and distract them with Dino and a strange fluffy yellow blob she doesn't recognise, and clean the blood off them.

Part of the reason she remains quiet even afterwards, as Steph and Sokka gather the fuel up and prepare to drive on to Gotham, is that she had to clean blood off her daughters.

And that she's just murdered a human being. That too.

Eventually, Sokka comes back from his own peeing excursion to find the girls camped out, ad Steph passed out, from the looks of it. He smiles a little to see her there and bends to rescue Hana from her sleepy clutches, grinning when he gets babbled out.

And Mel gets a brother to sit by.

"Probably not," Sokka agrees softly, shifting a bit to make the leaning easier while Hana clings to Dino and tells him how desolate she was without him. "But at least she'll be quiet about it."

He glances to her - somewhat awkwardly, with her head on his shoulder - and lowers his voice. "How're you doing?"

Shoulder knock.

"You sure?"

Because he's not, just from watching her all day.

Sokka nods and helps Hana count the stitches on Dino's nose. "Yup, I know," he agrees softly, and leans his head against hers.

"Don't have to be scared to be upset, though."

Sokka glances at her, arms briefly tightened around Hana's little, fragile body, before nodding. He hadn't known that, but he'd figured there must have been something, some kind of trigger.

So he turns to press his brow to her temple and says, very quiet, "I believe you."

Of course she doesn't need him. But he still wants to let her know.

Just in case.

"Crazy people?" Sokka guesses, shrugging a little. "Starving people? Crazy, starving people? I dunno, Mel, but I don't think there's a mom in the world who wouldn't have done exactly what you did, no matter who was pointing the gun."

[identity profile] notanoptimist.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka snorts with her, nudging her shoulder. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're the best mom ever, congratulations."

"Well, not every baby gets to watch a gas station explode," Sokka points out, grinning and bouncing Hana gently. "That's usually saved for the tenth birthday."

[identity profile] notanoptimist.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka laughs again, bouncing and leaning. "Well, of course they do. They're yours and Zuko's. They have death wishes built into their DNA."

[identity profile] notanoptimist.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"I've been trying to get it out of you a good two years," Sokka points out dryly, brows raised as he looks at her. "Has that worked yet?"

[identity profile] notanoptimist.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"You could be moldable," Sokka informs her, reaching around her shoulders to poke at her face. "I've never actually tried, but it's totally possible."

[identity profile] notanoptimist.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka snorts and gives her a look. "When did the threat of you kicking my ass ever stop me from doing anything?"

Sokka gives Dino a scritch and Hana accepts him happily back into her arms.

Mel, however, gets a smirk. "I'll see it when you do," he promises.
