River is in the Cooper farm's living room, lying flat on her belly in a patch of sunlight. It's unclear whether she's catnapping or simply has her eyes shut to make listening easier, but either way she's quite botherable.

"It's not quantifiable."

Her eyes flicker open, and peer at Loo.

Loo has a carved flying bison in her hand, and when she reaches the sunlight, she sits down to hit the floor with it.

A second later she offers it to River.

"Right," Mel agrees, and drops onto the couch to watch. "I'm Mel, by the way."

Y'know, just in case.

"No evidence to the contrary," she agrees, and watches the bison intently for signs of unexpected flight.


The narration would like us all to sit back for a moment, and just marvel at that pure conversational genius. River would sparkle at a dinner party.

That's OK. Mel can sit back and watch.

Loo, however, is adamant River take the bison. Take it, take it! She presses it forward.

"The wings are too short," she explains to Loo helpfully, still not taking the bison. "Like a bumblebee. It's a logical improbability."

But Uncle Sokka told Loo all about it! Loo explains this in detail to River. Flying bisons can fly because they're airbenders and look at its big tail!

Mel, of course, doesn't understand a word.

It's not wooden! It's a real live flying bison! Hasn't River ever played pretend?

Her mouth tugs upward, slightly.

"Okay."

Yay! Loo presses the toy towards River. Play with her!
