So, Silent Hill was a bust. In that it didn't exist.
Ashfield, she's found, is in the same boat. The same not-existing boat.
This world SUCKS.
Now, Laura has siezed on a new plan: go to the closest city she knows of that HAS to exist.
There's a New York City everywhere, right?
This requires more walking, of course, but that's nothing she hasn't done before.
And there were a few intact stores on the way. Hooray for new underwear!

Those shoes, they are weird. But comfortable.

...OK, Mudkip did not actually get new anything important.
Although it has glommed onto a stuffed bath toy, which is attached by a sash to its back.

"Um... just down... there..." Laura points down the ramp.
"And..."
...there's the skyline, in the distance. It looks... kind of "off."

"Should the buildings look like that?" Valerian asks. It looks a bit. . . smooshed.

There had SO better not be any creepy mermaids here.
"Maybe there's someone living there, anyway. It's really big. And there are... ninjas and stuff."
no subject
It's very sad.
no subject
"You know, NINJAS! They have throwing stars and cool weapons, and they beat people up. And they can hide real good, so you don't see 'em."
no subject
He's sort of like a ninja!
Kind of!
...if you squint.

"Oh, so they are warriors," Valerian says, and nods sagely. "We had best be careful, then!"

They only go after the big heroes, you see.
(Or bad guys, if they are the heroes. Ninjas are a complicated lot.)

He eyes the approaching buildings carefully. There is something. . . not right, isn't there?

...
...
That faint rattling sound coming from the other side of that wall over there would imply that, yes, something is indeed not right.

With a gulp, Mudkip scurries behind Valerian.

But, she is in charge - sort of - so if she wants to investigate, then investigate they shall.

She tries dodging around, before acquiescing grudgingly and following him. Which is less fun than normal when you are seven, because you're about butt height on adults.
But at least she's also at the height for this hole in the wall. With some kind of leaf thing on it.

The rattling gets louder. Something - is definitely moving on the other side of the wall. We know this, because it is moving the greenery.

The mudkip is still cowering, though at least cowering along with them. "Don't be such a baby," she orders it, trotting to a garbage can.
She climbs up, hoping she can stretch high enough to see over. Val can come help if he wants. She'll let him. She guesses.

"See anything?"
no subject
OK, more than kind of. Trees normally move in the wind, or if something's in them. They don't... walk.
no subject
"What sort of moving?"
Should they run away? Or investigate? Both are tempting. . .
no subject
"KIIIP!" The little blue creature tackles Laura just in time, the spines zhiffing past and piercing a boarded window above.
