Somewhere in New York, there is a gravestone. A five-foot-tall boulder, roughly square and about three feet wide on every side, but lumpy and uneven. The word RENEE is gouged into the flattest side.

Today, there is a girl sitting on top of it with her knees drawn up to her chest and a canvas bag perched beside her. Every so often, she takes an apple out of the bag, eats it, and tosses the core onto the rubble-covered ground.

Cooper Farm:
Sonia has managed to fob Ralph off on a babysitter and is currently sprawled on the top of the bunker, enjoying the relative silence of Outside. (Tweeting birds, wind, and the occasional sound of people Doing Stuff is silence compared to Very Loud Baby.)

The little yellow thing has joined her, mainly because she doesn't seem to be interested in attacking it and the grass on top of the bunker is good for nibbling. (It has gotten the message, after several attempts, that the end of Sonia's braid is not the same as the grass and should not be included in the category "Things that are allowed for chewing on if you are not Ralph.")

There is plenty of room for anyone else who wants to pass a lazy summer day.

New York City:
Laura was very excited a little while ago. It is summer! Summer means swimming! In pools! She even found swimsuits that fit her! It was going to be awesome!

Only a lack of maintenance crew has left the pools of New York in an Extremely Icky state.

Laura is sulking by a public swimming pool. Mudkip, however, is AOK with icky pools, and is splashing about and enjoying himself.

Winter means snow.

Snow means snowmen. Also, snow angels, snowballs, and various other snow-related artistry.

This is especially so when there are wide swaths of street occupied only with the occasional empty car. (OK, also triffids, but those were somewhat slowed thanks to the weather.)

Laura is currently working on a large family of snow cats, having exhausted her interest in snow humanoids.

Given enough time, she may well repopulate Manhattan. At least until the temperature goes back up.

Meanwhile, in New York City...

Laura has changed her mind about the idea of camping out in FAO Schwarz forever, mainly because Hogwarts is warmer and less falling-apart in places. So, she's embarked on a campaign of moving toys to her claimed area of Gryffindor Tower. It's taken a while: Laura, like most children, is fairly greedy.

Mudkip has been drafted into Laura's moving operation, chiefly because he can carry a lot more than she can. When not thus engaged, he's usually either exploring Hogwarts or chillin' in a basin of water.

Jessica has been scrounging cold weather clothing and blankets for everyone. She's also collected newspapers and a few notebooks, and plans to start accosting anyone she knows who's been here longer than she has for date estimates.

Kern, despite anyone's best efforts, has proved distinctly opposed to leaving his spot in the subway power center. (Though he has gratefully accepted Jessica's gift of a couple of space heaters and some blankets.) He's mostly focused on expanding the power grid further, and trying to chat anyone else up on the radio.

[Usual multipup post stuff applies- lemme know who's being tagged and all.]

Having thoroughly vandalized one room of the castle (amazing how, when she was in the mood to break a lot of things, she found a room chock full of breakable things!), Laura has gone out in search of further, possibly less destructive, amusement.

She has ensconced herself in the FAO Schwartz store, and is now seriously considering moving herself there. What kid wouldn't want to live in a giant toy store?

Grabbing some bread and crackers to snack on seemed to help stomach wise, and keep her blood sugar ok. At least Kate didn't feel as pukey or dizzy now. She wanted to patrol, but she still felt tired all the time. And the less said about running to the lavatory the better. So she just took her time, and was mostly staying up near the towers and owlrey in Hogwarts Castle to keep track of triffid movements.
Though first chance she gets? Definitely gonna head to the subways and streets to see how things are, and check on any more new arrivals.

Will's feeling rather happy as he eats his lunch in the Great Hall and just keeps randomly grinning.

There is a spider outside.

An uncommonly big spider.

Bigger than a tarantula big.

Laura is crouched and poking at it curiously with a stick.

This morning's entertainment: totally taken care of.
[identity profile] candied-rabbit.livejournal.com
It's been a long time since Momiji - this Momiji, at least - found himself stuck as a rabbit. And he can't remember ever waking up as one, but, today, this is exactly what's happened. Just squirming out from underneath the covers had proved a very fearful adventure. And, as if things couldn't get any worse...he hasn't turned back.

Not after the usual five or so minutes of waiting idly on his bed. Not after another fifteen. By the time his internal clock told him he was probably approaching the half-hour mark, he was in something of a panic.

Which is why, now, there's a little, white-furred rabbit hopping through Hogwarts in an awful hurry. Maybe there'll be someone who can explain why a curse he thought was broken is suddenly reasserting itself like mad. Though, with his luck, he thinks, he'll probably turn back in the middle of the hall, a mile or two away from his clothes.

Not a good morning, overall.

Cooper Farm:
Sonia is really not into this whole pregnancy thing. Not only has it required a total change in wardrobe and lessened activity, but it's been giving her such joys as indigestion, cramps, and similar indignities. Right now, she's sprawled under a tree, trying to stop up a nosebleed and hoping that this, too, is a normal thing and not some kind of horrible precursor to, say, the child being an inhuman fiend.

Windows 95 is, as usual, doing her thing in the hospital. Which, of late, has mainly involved finding new ways to keep the paperwork organized and accessible.

Pikachu has plonked itself down on the top of the bunker and is enjoying the weather and chewing on grass. It has a very simple, and very awesome life.

New York:
Laura has staked out a room in Gryffindor Tower, and is in the process of making several runs into the city to raid the convenience stores for snack food. Joy is having a big pile of candy bars and nobody to tell you not to eat them. (OK, nobody that you HAVE to listen to.)

Mudkip, despite all evidence to the contrary, is kind of brave enough to go on exploring runs. Kind of. He's timidly edging along buildings now, ready to duck inside and hide at the first sign of... anything.

Jessica is working on a bigger version of her map of the subway system as it is now, intended for mass consumption. (Well, "mass" as in "anyone in the common areas of the subway right now.") She'll be putting copies up over the old official maps once she's done (and has found the proper keys to open the display cases).

Kern is still pestering people over the subway PA. The recent difference, however, is that he's pestering in toddler English in addition to gibberish, rather than the parroted English and gibberish combo he'd been using. The language lessons are having an effect! (Whether the effect is wholly desirable is another story.)

Will has been exploring the castle and hasn't found a courtyard so he's in the Great Hall going through sword forms.

Tiwa doesn't like all the fighters around New York, she knows they're good at defending but not a lot of them seem very fun. At the moment, she's sitting on a fire escape somewhere in New York and eating an ice cream, she's really good at finding food.

Tumnus is around the farm, quietly watching people and sometimes playing his pipes.

(OOC: They're all due an EP so just say who you want in the tag.)

This castle was pretty impressive, Kate had found her way up to what was once the owlery as evidenced by some fossilized owl droppings and pellets that she found around as she headed up for a good view of the city. Easy to track triffids movements from here when they're out, and she was going to do patrols around to find where there might be other survivors like Jessica around here. Or just new arrivals in need of help. But at least, had the start of a base and headquarters with some supplies already. Including what Garo and Will had brought up. Hopefully Nathan will bring more, and more volunteers.

She had asked him to write a notice on the farm board, and leave information in Metropolis to anybody who might be interested in coming up and helping. Including a special message to Teddy to update him on her location. Also apologies to Mel for leaving the farm and patrol on short notice, and her thanks to Dinah for the practice help.

But her city needed her she felt, and she didn't think it was lost just yet.

"What password?! Just open up, fatso!"

Laura has found an entrance to one of the towers. However, she's stumbled on a little problem: namely, the talking painting of a fat woman who's demanding some kind of password. This is clearly unfair treatment in a place where there isn't anyone else around.

Unfortunately, punching the picture doesn't seem to do anything useful.

From the Great Hall of Hogwarts a small and quick bird flies down and almost hovers with darting motions.

Tiwa had been divebombing students outside Hunter and now she's here.

This doesn't feel like a prank but maybe it is. She zips and darts around, pecking at all the things she can find, seems almost of the Dreaming.

This is SO COOL.

There is a CASTLE in New York.

Totally worth sneaking out of the tunnels and risking evil plants to check out. Because, CASTLE! Right there!

Laura is not going unarmed, of course! She has dragged Mudkip along, who is being jumpy about every little thing.

The two are currently in the entry hall, generally being impressed. (Laura is hoping to find big, fancy beds. That would be awesome and tons more comfortable than piles of rags. Also less stinky. Mudkip is hoping not to find any monsters.)
[identity profile] runawayalot.livejournal.com
Some of the tunnels have flooded. Laura has found one and improvised a little fleet of boats from whatever trash she could find. She's currently seated on the edge of a platform, humming happily and poking the boats around with a stick.
[identity profile] runawayalot.livejournal.com
So, Silent Hill was a bust. In that it didn't exist.

Ashfield, she's found, is in the same boat. The same not-existing boat.

This world SUCKS.

Now, Laura has siezed on a new plan: go to the closest city she knows of that HAS to exist.

There's a New York City everywhere, right?

This requires more walking, of course, but that's nothing she hasn't done before.

And there were a few intact stores on the way. Hooray for new underwear!
[identity profile] runawayalot.livejournal.com
It's been a long, long journey.

Long, and empty. Even the ability to walk in the middle of the road without getting run over has become boring. Not to mention, Laura's shoes are wearing thin and her clothes are smelly, and she hasn't had a proper bath in weeks.

But they're at the Maine border now, her, Valerian, and Mudkip, and there's a rest stop with maps and vending machines. Which some enterprising soul has helpfully beaten within inches of their nonfunctioning lives trying to open up.

There's not enough room for an adult to get anything, but there's a hole large enough for a skinny child's arm. She extracts a few bear claws and passes them out.
[identity profile] runawayalot.livejournal.com
The day is a steam cooker, the road gritty, and without trees to shelter them.

Fortunately, it empties onto a boulevard. A KFC, a Burger King, and then rows of faded historical buildings, the crumbling brick blocks tall enough to at least shield the sun a bit. Laura makes a beeline to a tourist station. "They got maps here," she announces, pointing through a dusty, cracked window.
[identity profile] in-two-minds.livejournal.com
Valerian hates, hates, hates this. One moment he and Notched Ear had been hunting, and it was dark and damp and good, then there was a bang, and bright light that hurt his eyes, and. . . Notch was gone. His mind had been abruptly ripped from the hound's, and slammed back into his own body. He'd been so shocked and pained by that it had been several hours before he'd noticed that one of the reasons that his eyes hurt was the bright sunlight that shouldn't have been there.

It's been four days, and his head still hurts.

Valerian hadn't worried about where he was - just how to find out. He'd found a road - which was weirdly paved with some kind of solid black stuff that was pleasantly warm to his feet, and followed it.

It'll lead to some sort of settlement eventually, right?
