Garo nods, quickly. He settles into a comfortable standing position, head bowed and eyes closed and is still for a while.
He's thinking. Drawing up memories.
The steel gallows, cords swinging against the bloody noon. The dark damp cell, lit all blues and greens and stinking of rotting, bones, all the waste and blood of the previous prisoner. Chains against his wrists, sharp objects, that long red line of pain. Prisoner competitions - Race until you drop; thrown in a ring and humiliated as the other convict takes his time beating you. Dragged across the ring by a foot. Betrayal, the guards from every doorway, the apologies.
Blueish-silver light flares up around him. It turns to flame, then molds to the planes and contours of something indistinct but monstrous, always shifting, shrieking and thrashing and howling.
Garo remains deathly still, and the monster (now even more shakey and vague, and quickly vanishing) eventually stills also, still shifting from shape to shape but not really moving much at all. A moment later, it vanishes out into shapeless fire and mist.
A moment later, those vanish too, light fading around Garo as he sags a little, breathing heavily.
