There is a big notice now up on the notce board Nathan provided.

It says:

Martial Arts Training.
All levels welcome. Intermediate and advanced to start at dawn by the bunker. Beginners at 3pm every afternoon. Everyone welcome.

In jeans and a T-shirt, for once (the fishnets are only for fighting), Dinah stands back and admires her handiwork.

Yeah, it's good to feel needed.

A nod which Dinah returns, just before she frowns thoughtfully.

"A notice advertising training sessions," she says. "I was thinking of putting it up again in Japanese. Think that'd help?"

She knows Zuko isn't Japanese, but Windows 95 is.

"Oh," he says, expression clearing slightly. "And, I'm not sure. What is Japanese... another language?"

Dinah, nods, and grabs her pen again.

"Now, I'm not perfect with the script," she says, and then writes Training Sessions or something like it underneath in pretty accurate script.

"Can you read that?"

Zuko eyes it. It definitely looks more familiar than the other version, and if he takes it to mean...

"It's closer," he says after a moment, reluctantly. "The shape of this," he indicates a symbol, "looks a good deal like our writing. But without knowing already, I don't think I could have read it."

Dinah nods, failing to mask her disappointment "It figures it'd be different. Never mind, would you be coming to the training sessions?"

The slight smile on Zuko's face is not particularly awkward, for once.

"Definitely," he says. "I'm very interested to see other styles than mine - I saw you and Mel the other day."

"There's someone who would be nearly unstoppable if she had more training," Dinah says. "It was good to get a workout."

Zuko smiles slightly. "I bet. I hope to start training properly again with Uncle soon. Even if I will have the opportunity to learn different techniques."

Then he hesitates. "Mel... How does she do that, do you know? Where I come from, Benders are often stronger and faster than others, but not like that. It was incredible."

And he's massively curious, but also feels reluctant to ask too much.

"Steph says she's always had it," Dinah replies, vaguely thoughtful. "I just assumed she had a metagene - benders are the only people with powers on your world?"

Zuko nods thoughtfully.

"Yes. There are degrees, and different abilities, but always within the four elemental powers. How about your world - I take it things work differently?"

A nod.

"Meta powers are - well, they're sort of random sometimes. Here..."

Casting around for something to use as an example, she grabs a chipped ceramic cup and offers it to him.

"Hold this. Lightly. Keep your hand steady."

Zuko obeys very carefully - you get used to that with a girlfriend who knifethrows for a hobby. At least firebending taught you that much. A wobbly hand when you can shoot fire out of it is really bad.

Dinah grins at him once, then opens her mouth.

The sound is low in volume, but high in frequency - very high. Just on the point of human hearing high, and it just brushes past Zuko's ears, because the bulk of the soundwaves are - contrary to all laws of wave physics - somehow focused on a spot just above his hand.

And the cup shatters into large fragments.

Zuko frowns slightly at the indefinable tickling in his ears, then his eyes widen slightly moments after he snatches his hand back in reflex.

"...That's incredible," he says, as soon as it sinks in. "How does it work?"

He's thinking a form of Airbending, for the record.

"Supersonic frequency from my own larynx," Dinah answers.

It is, technically, a form of airbending, as much as all speech is.

"I'm the only person I've known to have that."

Supersoniwhatnow?

"I see. I've never seen anything like that in the Four Nations. It looked a little like Earthbending, but you hardly moved."

"I think it's closer to air-," Dinah says, "because it's the air carrying the sound. But it's really neither."

Neither?

What a crazy world.

"I'll take your word for it. But- if it's unique, how did you find our you could do that?"

"I've always been able to do it," Dinah says.

"I think my parents first noticed when I cried and broke the windows."

Zuko smiles slightly at the image.

"Those must have been an interesting few years," he says.

"It was," Dinah agrees. "Lucky Mom had friends with varying powers, who helped me learn to control it."

Zuko nods.

"Firebenders often help controlling new ones - but fortunately, it tends to run in families."

"Which I guess means Mel's kids have a father from your world?"

It just hadn't occured to Dinah to ask.

He nods, obliviously.

"So she says. He didn't come with them, though."

"Then I guess she'll be asking you for a favour soon enough."

Dinah is also oblivious!
