Ai-Ling remained in Lawrence while some of the others removed to Smallville, partly out of a hope that someone she knew might turn up where she did and be able to find her easily.

This world is strange in a number of ways that she's desperately trying to pretend she can handle, but one of those is the lack of fresh food. Which is why she stalked off on her own for a couple of days and returned hauling a young calf on her back.

This is why one of the gardnes near Jo's house is beginning to smell quite a bit like barbequed veal.

It is very lonely, and very boring, being a ghost.

The kitchen is cold again. There's water in the sink, even though almost everyone who uses the kitchen empties it when they're done; it's clear, clean, and rippling slightly in no wind at all. Occasionally a drop rises into the air and then splashes sadly back down.

It's so frustrating. She used to be able to build mountains of ice. Now just lifting one drop is nearly impossible.
